Churchin' The Old Time Way!

I cherish many memories as a young minister beginning my ministry here in Los Angeles. In particular, I fondly remember the habit of literally churchin' on sunday from sun up to sun down. Well, today kind of reminded me of that past time. I actually went to four different services in one day, something that I dont do too often anymore. Now that Im pastoring, there is little time and few sunday's where I may feel like doing this or I may not have the time to do it. Today it all began with me ministering at Redeemer MBC in Los Angeles. Then I was off to the 11am worship at New Corinthian BC in Pasadena. After a brief meal, all roads led to the Zion Baptist Evangelistic Temple in Compton in observance of their 50th Church Anniversary. Dr. Sherman Gordon, my classmate and friend served as the speaker. And finally the train stopped at the Faithway MBC in Los Angeles for the final Youth Explosion of 2007. This is a ecumenical youth & young adult service that has been very popular in this city for over 8 years. Our thanks and appreciation is extended to Dr. Michael Metters for his vision and support of this endeavor. It is held every 4th sunday night at 6pm and different youth ministers throughout the city serve as speakers. Tonight, my friend and brotha, Rev. Terry Brooks from San Diego declared the word. What a word! What a day of wonderful worship and we pray that He get all the glory............

Speaking at Redeemer MBC - Los Angeles

On yesterday, I served as the guest speaker for the Redeemer MBC in Los Angeles, CA where the Rev. Curtis Monroe is the Pastor. The service was hosted by the Christian Education Dept. I completely appreciated my visit to Redeemer. The hospitality was very genuine and the fellowship was very warm. The great people of that congregation serve as great examples of Christianity. I was very appreciative for the invitation and thankful for the divine opportunity. Let's continue in prayer for this pastor and congregation. I also enjoyed the felowship of the brethern, Rev. Jason Lewis, Rev. Louis Monroe & Rev. Elton Johnson.

It's Here - Hunting Season!

The time has come to hit the deserts of the great state of california in search of prey. As most of you know, I am an aspiring outdoorsman. My latest sports hobby would be my hunting adventure. I picked up this sport last year at the request of a few of my friends. This was one sport that I thought I would not like but was surprised that I did. It was very interesting to me learning the safety features of the sport and then the actually skill. Tomorrow we will launch for our first hunt. We plan to hunt the San Diego deserts in search of jack rabbit and quayle. My hunting partners will be Pastor C. Jones, Pastor R. Henry & Pastor K. Stafford. Please pray for us that we have safe travel and a safe hunt. Rabbits here we come..........

PS - CONFESSION: I have yet to clean my catch or even eat any. I'll leave this for the pros.

Spending The Thanksgiving Holiday Without My Mom & Brother!

This Thanksgiving Holiday will be a little different than normal. Because my mother and brother will be spending this holiday in Phoenix, AZ. They are there with other family members enjoying the holiday season. My mother only had two children, which makes my immediate family very small. I was reared most of my life without a father or a male presence in the home. Therefore, for most of my life it has only been my mother, brother and myself. Which means that I have gotten used to spending most if not all holidays with them. I'm sure they will have a great day there in Phoenix with my other extended family. Over the last 5 years more than half of my extended family have moved there. I have an aunt, uncle and many many cousins who now call Phoenix home. I also have my step-grandfather there. I'm told that the dinner will be at his home. I plan to spend the day with someone special as well as visit family members here in LA/Pasadena. Again, I wish the best for my blog readers on this holiday. Share alot of love and remember, do not eat too much! Happy Thanksgiving....

My visit to New Philadelphia Baptist Church

On yesterday afternoon, I attended the 13th Church Anniversary of New Philadelphia Baptist Church where my friend and brother Elder Eugene O. Bryant is the Senior Pastor. The service was really warm and the fellowship was hospitable. As always, I enjoy visiting this congregation. I had the priviledge of serving in their Winter Revival this year and the relationship with their pastor has strengthened since that time. Elder Bryant is a gracious person. He completely serves as a great steward of God and his assignment. This ministry orginated from the historical Cornerstone Institutional Baptist Church where the king himself served as pastor, Rev. James Cleveland. Elder Bryant served as the assistant pastor for over 20 years and became the pastor after the passing of Rev. Cleveland. The special guests for the afternoon were the Tabernacle of Praise Baptist Church, Rev. Roderick Walker and the Praises of Zion Baptist Church, Rev. Joe B. Hardwick. Pastor Hardwick served as the keynote speaker. Pastor Hardwick preached about "Salvaging The Baptist Church". There was a wonderful repass for the ministers and wives afterwards that was delicious. My New Philadelphia experience was GREAT! Let's continue in prayer for this pastor and ministry. Happy Birthday New Philadelphia!!!

Happy 41st Birthday NEWCO!

The year was 1966, exactly 41 years ago that the New Corinthian Baptist Church of Pasadena was born. This local assembly of believers has continued to serve the Greater Pasadena community as a great beacon light. Happy Birthday Newco. I wanted to share some history of this great church with my blog readers. Enjoy!
A Brief History of the New Corinthian Baptist Church of Pasadena
serving the Kingdom since 1966

In accordance with the Great Commission and with a divine mandate in mind, the Rev. Ike K. Morris organized a mission in October 1966. The mission began in the home of Deacon and Sister Eugene Ware at 440 W. Walnut Street in Pasadena, California. Services were held there for two weeks.
The members of the mission were Deacon and Sister Eugene Ware, Deacon Moody Armstrong, Mother Hamilton, Sister Leona Colton and Sister Frances Pickett. The mission shared through the Grace of God and the Kindness of Pastor C.D. Fisher the facilities of the Union Baptist Church of Pasadena for one month. The mission moved to 546 N. Fair Oaks Avenue, Pasadena, California. Two members joined the mission, Sister Roberta Green and Dec. J.W. Colton.
A meeting was called for the purpose of organizing a church. In attendance was Rev. J.E. Ellis- New Zion Hill Baptist Church, Rev. Joseph Richardson – Prosperity Baptist Church and Rev. S. T. White – Emmanuel Baptist Church. The Rev. Ike J. Morris was elected pastor of the newly organized church. The church was then named the New Corinthian Baptist Church of Pasadena. Rev. J.E. Ellis gave the charge from II Timothy 4:1-8. Our church began to grow in membership and ministry while worshipping at 546 N. Fair Oaks. The church initiated the purchase of property located at 474 N. Summit Avenue on a land sales contract.
In January 1969, Rev. Ike J. Morris resigned as pastor of the New Corinthian Baptist Church of Pasadena. After one month without a shepherd, Rev. A.J. Shears was elected as the new Pastor. The church continued to grow under the leadership of Rev. Shears with the addition of new programs for the youth and expanded fellowships. Rev. Shears served as Pastor from February 1969 until his resignation in July 1975.
In August 1975, the New Corinthian Baptist Church of Pasadena elected its associate minister, Rev. A.K. Brown as the new Pastor. Under Rev. Brown leadership, many accomplishments were made and visions fulfilled. Rev. Brown served for 10 years and 11 month before resigning in July 1986. The church then received Rev. J.L. Ransom as Interim Pastor where he served for 6 months.
In April 1987, Rev. W.C. Coleman became the new Pastor of the New Corinthian Baptist Church of Pasadena. This was an exciting time in ministry. The outreach arm of the church was reaching those in the community who was in need of hope and healing. Under Rev. Coleman leadership many commitments were fulfilled including the payoff of a second mortgage. In January 1991, Rev. Coleman appointed an Assistant Pastor, Rev. M.E. Reynolds, who would later serve as the church next Pastor. Rev. Coleman resigned in February 1991.
Rev. M.E. Reynolds served as Pastor from February 1991 until October 1999. After Rev. Reynolds resignation, Rev. T.L. White served as Interim Pastor for 6 months.
After 9 months of prayer, the church then elected Rev. F. Demond Harris as their new Pastor in February 2000. Under Rev. Harris leadership the church has experienced growth in all areas of ministry. Many ministries have been developed to meet the needs of the families within our church and community. We have hosted a community day that reaches hundreds for the past 5 years. In 2002 we started the Newco Community Learning Institute. A program designed to enhance man in the areas of literacy and career development. We established a Cleaning and Janitorial business named Newco Dustbusters Inc. We have remained a leader in the cleaning industry since March 2004. In the summer of 2006, we planted a Hispanic Ministry "Ministerio Evalgelistico Palmbra De Vida" thus making us ONE CHURCH - TWO MINISTRIES. After 41 years, we are consistently serving the spiritual, emotional and physical needs of man in the Greater Pasadena Community.

Healthy Marriage Certification

Off all the courses that is available out there, I have found myself taking a course on the subject of "Healthy Marriage". Wow! Most of you know by now that I am ending a 13 year marriage that have been "city-wide". That is, the news of my divorce have been rampart conversation for most in the church community. Recently, I was enrolled in a program at the advice of my state president in which I will be a certified teacher of the number one cirriculm in the country. The course is being held in Westchester, CA this week and I look forward to the training in this particular field. The Western Baptist State Convention is the host through a federal program that it offers. The participants are selected and is expected to facilitate throughout the upcoming year in churches throughout Southern California. I look forward to the challenge and experience. With the ups and downs that I've had in the last 13 years, I believe that I'm still a good candidate to teach on this subject. Though I expect to marry again, I'm sure this training will give me some good principles for marriage when that day approaches. Continue in prayer for me!

The Will Smith/Jada Pickett Dilema

Recently I assisted someone with what I call the Will Smith/Jada Pickett family dilema. They are description that represent many american families due to the many single family households in america. That is, when two individuals are raising children from a previous relationship. Along with the challenges of the prior seperation or divorce, it brings many other ones with it. I myself have been in this situtation. In many cases like mine, it can work itself out to be something good, but in most cases not so. Most of the time, it causes life changing issues for the adults as well as the children. It is a national statistic that says 66% of children these days are from broken households. What a shock! Which determines that the root of this national crisis is not the innocent children that are involved, but the adults who create these situations. Which means if a solution is available, it is available through we as adults making greater decisions in regards to who we commit to. Sometimes we can establish relationships and lifestyles with the wrong people for the wrong reasons and suffer in the end. Adults can create something comfortable for them at the present and from that a child is produced to a lifetime of disasterous memories. There are not many stories like Will and Jada. Their public persona says that their fairytale marriage is working. That's what we know..... If that is the case with them, it is not with many, many others. Not only is there a difference and tension in the household, but often times it creates tension from others particulary family members. When this happens, it creates space in the relationship with family and friends. Remember, all of this is due to the broken parental relationship of the child. Many cases follow this example. In the particular case that prompted this blog, the woman want the man to be the total man in the household and relationship EXCEPT: as it relates to HER children. He can feed them, pay all the bills, help in the nuturing, be the responsible household protection and party, but not even make a recommendation to or about the children. Without giving my opinion, give me your thoughts concerning this subject in the comment section. If this man is not in no way harming the children, should he assume the role in all ways but with the children? Unfortunately, the Will/Jada dilema does not work for many. But at the same time, how many families are out there that are not ready made as we call it. Families that are, can be healthy but with much maturity, prayer and love.

Speaking at New Revelation MBC

On yesterday I had the honor of ministering at the historic New Revelation MBC in Pasadena, CA where the legendary Dr. William Turner Jr. is the senior pastor. On top of the fact that this great church is in the same city that I pastor in, I also served there in full-time ministry for over 4 years as the Minister of Evangelism. This was a special time in ministry for me. It exposed me to such a different side of ministry that I had never saw. The mission of this church is "Until the whole man is served, our mission remains". It's ministries definitely reflect it's mission statement. It serves families of the church and community in many areas. One of it's strongest ministries are those that operate under the umbrella of Outreach. Yesterday was really special to me. Dr. Turner is now recovering from a surgery earlier this past August. Though he is doing well, I solicit your prayers for this man of God and the New Revelation church family. Last month, Dr. Turner celebrated 40 years as the leader of this congregation. What a wonderful achievement and milestone. Our time together was warm and refreshing. It's always good to be home. The worship was really great and the word was encouraging. Psalms 34:1 - "I will bless the lord at all times and His praise shall continually be in my mouth".

People - People - People

What is earth without the human species? In all of God's creation, we were given dominion and authority over all of His creation. We were even made in His image and likeness. No only that, but God called together the total collective of His being in order to create us. The question that have always baffled me about people, individuals or humans is why are they like they are? Why do they do the things they do? Why do they act or say what they should not? Why do their lives reflect anything but God?

Bottom line man is out of order. Whenever man is out of the will of God, it is expected that life on earth for him/her will be living hell. Our character, personality and attitude will be ugly as ever. It's important that we strive for the excellence of God for our lives so that life on earth would be favourable along with those that He has given us to share this earth with. Whenever we unrighteous, then most things around us will not go right. Therefore, this is a word for many, focus on your own life and let all of the mote leave your eyes prior to picking it out of mine. Just a few scattered words from my heart................
